Albert Einstein said of Mahatma Gandhi, "Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth."
Director Richard Attenborough's GANDHI aims to prove that. A towering tribute to
that would win 8 Oscars - more than any British film in the entire 55-year history of the academy.
opens 30 Jan 1948 - day of assassination.
funeral scene - all real - 400,000 extras.
without wealth, without property, without official title or office, mahatmanm gandi was not the commander of armies nor the ruler of vast lands- he could not boast any scientific achievement or artistic gift - yet men, govts, dignitaries from all over the world have joined hands today to pay homage to this little brown man in a loincloth who led his country to freedom. In the words of Gen George c. marshal: Mahat gandh has become the spoeksman for the conscience of all mankind - he was a man who made humility and simple truth more powerful than empires.
Preamble: "No man's life can be encompassed in one telling. There is no way to give each year its alotted weight... What can be done is to be faithful in spirit to the record and try to find one's way to the heart of the man."
bapu = father
Mahatma = great spirit
Gandhi starts his revolution by destroying passes that separates the Indians from the British, just like jews needed to be marked, etc. Just like every country still has the word "race" on their legal forms. As long as that term exists, there will be Race-Ism . A contry can have a black president or a female rpes btu as long as that term exists, there is inequality.
Gandhi: "the first step in changing our status is to eliminate this difference between us"
filled with imperious british actors.
in and out of jail constantly
Ben Kingsley is Mohandes K. Gandhi. The best visual casting since George C. Scott as PATTON, or Jeffrey Hunter as the KING OF KINGS, or Chris Reeve as SUPERMAN (or Attenborough himself, who would play Kris Kringle in 1994's MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET).
Kingsley not only looks like Gandhi - he embodies the man in every sad little tic, every facial gesture, every benevolent look and sympathetic nod. There was no way he was NOT going to win that Best Actor Oscar.
Watch for Daniel Day-Lewis as a young punk to Gandhi: "Get off the pavement, you bloody coon!"
Priest Charlie Andrews - having just won an award the year before as the Olympic runner in CHARIOTS OF FIRE
death of his wife - where do people reach for these kind of emotions?
aug 1947 - india paksitan border - fighting breqks out
even though took a vow of cliebacy - he was a total pimp always surrounded by women.
Edward Fox as aptly-named Gen. Dyer. Stony-faced, he shoots down people, women children.
