Back then, in this 1989 movie, Denzel makes an offhanded joke, "I'd run for President." Laughs 'round the campfire. "I'd win!" Bigger laughs. Back in '89, it was still unheard of for a black man to even contemplate running. Funny thing is: in 2011, if Denzel himself actually decided to run - he probably would win!


The last scene of GLORY shows Shaw's final resting place, as his body is tossed into a common grave, to slide down a sand hill and come to rest with his fellow black troops. The movie never does reveal the significance of this act. The enemy thought to drive home a scathing insult this white man who fought alongside black troops and so separated him from his fellow white corpses and threww him unceremoniously into a common grave with black troops. But Shaw's father put this insult to rights when he asserted that he was proud his son was buried with the men who fought alongside him. Tears springing to eyes. A shot to the heart.
