Last of the Real Men?
Simply describe the last scene.
You know what I think of Romantic movies – yet I well up in tears for this whole last sequence – where Uncas proves to her and
she suddenly realizes that there can be no greater sacrifice in his life – that this is true love –and she who has proably never been touched by a man – decides to take her own life rather than submit ot
Magua’s bronzed-
sinewed people.
That last scene - they tousle – they stumble – go to the edge –
The majestic Russell Means
when sister drops to her suicide rather than go with the maguas tribe, it may be construed as echoing BIRTH OF A NATION. The act is the same, the intent wildly different. she did not jump because she was repulsed at the Native-American - she jumped because she had tacitly betrothed herself to ANOTHER Native American.
Beyond-Romantic.
There’s no silly high-pitched screaming – she just yells when her sister falls from the cliff – sister dies without any screaming – there is one yell from Hawkeye – “UNCAS”
and in slow motion without audio, Chingachgook yells – as he sees his only son fall.
All the while that irish jig is playing overlaid with orchestral
That old world drone – the only soundtrack to this drama played out on the edge of a cliff.
