Maybe would have fared better had it been released when people actually thought of the MAIL as a communicative device. Maybe 30 years ago it might have worked as a "believable" story.
In this age of email and Instant Messaging, cellphones that span the globe due to Arthur C. Clarke's Global Positioning Satellites, the major disconnect in THE POSTMAN must surely be that a technological society able to wipe itself out, would have been at such a level of technology that letter-writing would have been defunct - at the least, reserved for old people and others who would not be at society's forefront and who would probably not survive a holocaust anyway, and would - in the strictest Darwiniian sense - be wiped outfor survival of the stronger organisams who require that ruthlessness to survive.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't The Beatles conquer the univese, not just Liverpool and New Yorek. - so how does he get away with the ruse that the new president's name is "richard Starkey"? If he is of an age where he knows The Beatles' drummer's original name, all those people around his age would ALSO know it. Heck, he even meets Tom Petty as Tom Petty, which means this is supposedly set in a time when Tom Petty is still alive, which means maybe twenty or so years into the future. What a stupid gimmick. If he had named the president Herman Rarebell, maybe I'd buy it. Not too many hillbillies know the drummer of The Scorpions.
