Every scene is a marvel of direction and blocking and revelation and dialog and setup . you don’t just need to know there’s a twist coming to enjoy this movie – this movie is such a marvel because it was constructed block by block bit by bit and anyone who thinks that the twist is what makes this movie is a blithering mindless redneck idiot.
shyamalan shows us the mundane as terrifying - when toni collette walks out of the kitchen in an unbroken take, when she walks back in allt he cupboards and drawers are open.
The twist is what makes the movie immortal.
M. Night Shyamalan at his very best.
The answer to the riddle of this movie is right there in the middle of it – one of the most famous lines of dialog, “I see dead people.” Further, deponent sayeth not.
Toni Collette's pouty lips on overdrive
and when that all-encomapssing Twist comes - it is not frightening or exciting - -- it is so sad. So sad.
When she is in restaurant alone and he comes in trying to apologize - after you know the movie, when you see her dining alone in the restaurant and he comes in trying to explain his lateness, she ignores him, signs the bill, and whispers "Happy Anniversary," and walks out.
