Leave us not forget that this was the movie that spawned Dirty Harry's most famous catchphrase, "Go ahead, make my day!" I even owned a t-shirt with Harry's torso pointing the magnum, emblazoned with that slogan.
Not surprisingly, the best scene in the movie is the opener, which contains that catchphrase; it is the Harry of old, and it could have been lifted from any of the first three classic Harrys.
Then the movie somehow falls very, very flat - and I'm sorry to say that the blame falls on Eastwood's shoulders, as the director of himself. Maybe he was a bit too self-conscious about direting himself in such an iconic role, but then, he has directed himself in roles that have beomce iconic, with the intent to make them iconic, so it is hard to understand why the rest of th emovie seems so understated, so slow-moving and self-conscous. The extras and supporting cast seem to be well aware they are extas and supporting cast. except for a solid Philo Beddoe knuckle duster at the local fishery, Harry's battles seem vapid and forced.
Watching the car chase between a robber on a motorized trike and Harry in an old folks bus is almost as exciting as watching Sondra Locke attempt a facial expression.
