What a character study -
It's a Clint Eastwood film--and he LOSES a fistfight! we think he's sgoing to win - because he's eastwood --but his loss reminds us that he is playing a character -and playintg it well! -- john huston --
the crux about his avengers, after he's beaten he voices the crux of the philosohy of all his avengrers,
"sometimes you just gotta fight, even if you know you're going to get your ass kicked. If you know it's right."
All his avengers have knowwn "it's right" that's why put up a fight - they just happen to always be the more superior fighters/ but this guy who is not the usperior one still puts up a fight. He was fighting for the honor of other people - as his avengers do so often, even thoguh they may seem selfish and loners.
one of the few movies where his character is not an avenger - except when he takes up that cause in thr fight - one of the few movies where Clint's character acutally arcs from a happy-go-lucky, irresponsible person who took it like a gag shooitng his first elephnat, to the realization that he would be taking a life that is part of a world much bigger than his paltry existence; that it's "bigger thana crime, that it's a sin" and coming to that realization too late.
FROM BIOGRAPHY:
Was it simple cowardice that led to his downfall, or was it inability to commit the acknolwedged sin of killing the elephant? Never answered.
