Celebrating 40 Years of Stunning Mediocrity.

The American comedy institution SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE continues its tradition of not being funny, by throwing a 40th Anniversary Special and not being funny.

SNL 40 is not only Not Funny, it’s embarrassing, pathetic and painful. Why do these people put themselves through this? Why do they put US through this? Why do audiences keep watching? Excepting a few quality seasons during its formative years, and a handful of good gags and entertaining personalities through its history, SNL has never been a prime cut; longevity seems to be counting more towards SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE’s comedy legacy than actual quality.

SNL 40, broadcast by NBC on Sunday February 15, 2015, touted as “Comedy’s Biggest Stars Come Home,” boasts a studio audience that consists of everybody who is anybody (from Spielberg down), brings together past alumni, past hosts, shows montages of classic sketches and bits, only has time for a few musical numbers, showcases veteran cast re-doing classic bits, and retains an overall sense of undeserved mutual cock-stroking.

I’m not going to outline a laundry list of bits; in this overlong show, the bits themselves are irrelevant. It’s the overarching impact of this drudgerous wankfest; the cognitive dissonance of continually hearing how “good” it is and yet witnessing exactly the opposite. Bits which are poorly written and badly rehearsed, amateur timing from supposed professionals, forced laughter, titters where there should be guffaws, and sometimes, those uncomfortable silences into which your career spirals never to be resurrected again… We view this whole shenanigan with hands over our faces, peeking through the gaps in our fingers.

It reminds me of the recent Monty Python reunion shows at the O2 arena (Jun 2014: Monty Python Live (Almost)); though that tour was a nostalgic success, even an artistic and commercial success, it was a complete failure in its attempt to recapture the timing and verve and urgency of youth. Which is what reunion shows like that – and this SNL one – are all about. Recapturing our youth. (And of course, selling advertising and merch to us in the process.) To the young or uninitiated, these shows will be a success or failure purely depending on NOW. To we who lived our youth through those original times, these shows succeed or fail on how well they recapture it. And let’s face it, they can’t recapture it. They will always only remain “failed attempts.” But it’s not just that metaphysical youth aspect – it’s the fact that when an old person tries to do something they did when they were young, it just doesn’t look right or read as well as it did when in their prime. It’s a terrible, sad fact of life.

Dan Aykroyd cannot possibly recapture the original “flavor” of his Bass-O-Matic sketch from the 70s. But he tries valiantly. And fails. In one of SNL 40’s first sketches, Aykroyd appears with that cheese-eating grin. He looks old. Really old. And fat. Camera pulls back and we see he is holding up a dead fish, a bass…

Silence.

Not even crickets. It’s just an old fat guy holding a fish. Now one would think that after all the lengths they’ve just gone to, of bashing us with the message that SNL is some kind of mythical laugh factory, that seeing the opening to the “classic” Bass-O-Matic sketch would elicit a cheer of recognition from the audience.

Silence. Because the studio audience (not the old stars, but the civilians) are too young to recognize this 35-year-old sketch! It was never one of the best sketches, but at least the performance in its heyday had a young, vital guy delivering his lines fitfully in a Pythonesque lightning strike. Now it’s just an old fat guy holding a fish. (At least with the 2014 Python shows, when Cleese came on with his dead parrot, stating, “I would like to register a complaint!” the audience’s rousing roar of recognition drowned out the pathos. Here, it was just pathos. This was devil’s territory from the get-go.) There was no way Aykroyd could attain the verve and urgency and timing of his youth. His speech was too slow for comfort, he missed putting one of the fish into the blender, he turned on the blender and it froze… His fake smile went on for miles, but the flop sweat on his soul was glistening hot…

You ask, “Why don’t they just pack it up?” Because this is what they do! What else CAN they do? This is how they made their bones. But recapturing the magic is definitely out of the question after a certain time…

Chris Rock gives a prolonged tribute to Eddie Murphy, who has gone the way of the dodo. The last quality thing he did was …um… uh… Then Eddie himself steps out to raucous applause and proceeds to do two minutes of SNL tradition (i.e. see paragraph 1).

The opening dance number with the somehow-talented Jimmy Fallon and ever-talented Justin Timberlake is spiffy. No complaints there; it retains that just-above-mediocre level that SNL sometimes attains on its absolute best nights.

Then the monologue with old hand Steve Martin (long since Not Funny himself, but somehow squeezing some last driplets of humor from his dead soul). During the monologue, Martin is beset on all sides by superstars who want to host, including Tom Hanks, Alec Baldwin, Chris Rock, Peyton Manning, Billy Crystal, Paul McCartney and Paul Simon… and then producer Lorne Michaels makes one of his many missteps, in his quest to attract a younger, more current audience (it’s a well-known fact that Michaels has final say on all decisions, good and bad, and all the artists cringe and bow to his every whim, as per WAYNE’S WORLD): Into this lion’s den of icons, Lorne decides to trot out… Miley Cyrus. Wait– Miley Cyrus?! Yes, that class-less hooker whore cunt Miley Cyrus shares the stage with the above legends who have done something useful with their lives. (No, tell us what you really think of Miley Cyrus, Poffy?) God knows how long she had to burnish Lorne’s perineum with that ball-licking trollop tongue to score this spot over other performers closer to the human race.

McCartney tanked. Introduced by Gollum– I mean, Keith Richards, the Beatle’s minstrel, the songster, the legend – bombed horribly. In the first seconds of Maybe I’m Amazed we could hear his voice is non-existent. And it went downhill. Now I’ve even closed the gaps in my fingers. I don’t want to watch. I don’t want to hear, I don’t want to live. At the time of writing, you cannot even find this performance on YouTube – you have to go deep into the TV station’s archives to find it – which means everyone involved (from management to McCartney himself) unanimously agree that it was so bad, it needed the hiring of pro hackers to restrict this video from being posted on YouTube at all costs. They will fail, of course, because YouTube is a behemoth that will eat all of us alive and screaming in the end.

People clapped. You have to clap, right? But now you’re not clapping because you were blown away by the performance or inspired or even mildly impressed (unlike that artistic inspirational perfection of George Harrison and Paul Simon doing Here Comes The Sun and Homeward Bound on SNL in 1976); you’re clapping in pity, that a 75 year old man can kinda sing a Paul McCartney song with a band and everything. Isn’t that special? He gets so excited when they let him out of the home and the boys let him play with them, it’s good for him, great-granddad needs to make some new friends…

The saddest thing is that of McCartney’s tens of thousands of times performing this song, when it hit the atmosphere crackling like a million suns, this SNL 40 abomination (when it surfaces in mainstream social media) is going to be the most codified, the most batted about the internet like cats and tits, commented on and analyzed and critiqued by this generation of twitter twats. Weep for the death of legends. Weep for the death of youth. Weep for Gollum who lost his Precious.

Some apologists might mitigate, Well, a couple of things were good (Billy Crystal asking, “You are Steve Martin, right?; a reasonably enjoyable “digital short” from Sandler and Sandberg, Will Ferrell’s Jeopardy, etc.). Of course a couple of things were good – these are professional comedians, and a stopped clock is right twice a day. But only a couple of things, in a show that is supposedly THE comedy lodestar of the United States? If you were making automobiles or heart monitors, this kind of percentage would be entirely unacceptable.

If SNL 40 had kept it to nanosecond montages of old bits, it could have salvaged a shred of dignity. Instead, each personality dragging their feet onto that supposedly hallowed stage just prolonged an agony that wasn’t going to go away with the constant sucking of Lorne Michaels’ dick.

Here’s to the next 40 years of not being funny.

The Rise and Fall of Stupid.

I don’t think much of Julianne Moore as an actress. And I despise Sarah Palin as a politician and human being. But Julianne Moore playing Sarah Palin? Priceless! In the HBO movie, GAME CHANGE, Moore gives a bravura performance as the Ditz Heard Round The World, the vice-presidential nominee in the 2008 American presidential election.

Steve Schmidt‘s correct assessment of the 24/7 news cycle is why Sarah Palin became a household name at all: Entertainment. Rubbernecking car-crash entertainment. We all knew it was a bloodied and broken train wreck from the get-go – but we couldn’t turn away.

Directed by Jay Roach (no stranger to political films, with the Emmy-winning RECOUNT), GAME CHANGE focuses on a small section of the book of the same name (by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, who make a cameo as reporters during the “amniotic fluid” bit), and is unabashedly All About Sarah. It was she whom the John McCain presidential campaign tapped to effect the “game change” so desperately needed in a moribund Republican field brimmed with sour old white guys (all polls indicated that if McCain chose anyone from the existing field – especially that haunted succubus Joe Lieberman – he would lose); it was she who was counted on to inject fresh blood into a cloying old boys’ club with her aw-shucks tits-and-ass; and it was she who would ultimately grind the McCain campaign down to a bleating loser freak show with her unbounded ignorance and dogged refusal to educate herself.

Film follows her meteoric rise and as-meteoric fall, told from the points of view of Palin’s two top aides, Operations Chief Steve Schmidt (Woody Harrelson) and Senior Advisor Nicolle Wallace (Sarah Paulson). Though they initially believed Palin was a “red light performer” (someone who didn’t do well in coaching, but turned on the charisma when the cameras were on), a few national interviews later, Schmidt came to the realization she “knew nothing” and that her selection as McCain’s running mate was his gravest tactical error in his hastiness to shake up the campaign – a campaign that had slipped from McCain’s grasp as soon as Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination.

“Obama has changed the game.”

GAME CHANGE is a true American Horror Story. By electing Barack Obama in November 2008, America dodged one of the most horrifying bullets in the history of the Republic: someone even more ignorant and incurious than W. Yes, Palin would have only been VP, but also would have been – as the commentators reminded us daily – only one 72-year-old heartbeat away from the Presidency. The experience of running a campaign for a certifiable imbecile gussied up to be a figurehead was so telling on Schmidt and Wallace – they were so put off by Palin’s ignorance and their own begrudging promotion of that ignorance – that they came over to the sensible side! They might not refer to themselves as Democrats, but they sure as hell ain’t Republicans no more, as their constant pusses on MSNBC attest.

Asked their opinions on the film and book, neither of them deny anything, both commenting their portrayals are commendable – even though the film fully places the blame on Schmidt’s shoulders for vetting Palin without asking her one policy question. Harrelson’s Schmidt laments this fact more than once, and is man enough to take the burden of blame. And real life Schmidt is man enough to do the same, one of his many strong points – as a human being and a sensible Republican (which is an oxymoron that just means non-Republican nowadays).

Julianne Moore – with the help of makeup, mannerisms and speech – IS Sarah Palin. Not overplaying, not satirizing, not poking fun; a full-bodied performance that captures everything we know of Palin, from her confident stump persona to her ingratiating wink, from her shrikey vocal stylings to the dropping of her g’s. Also, those blank looks she gives her advisors could have been played as ass-klown, instead, Moore chooses to mix in wonder and frustration and hurt. We would never see these actual faces from Palin, so Moore’s performance is doubly commendable.

Ed Harris is a very sympathetic, though foul-mouthed, John McCain (every second word is ‘fuck’, as in real life); Peter MacNicol and Ron Livingstone are advisors, and Jamey Sheridan, who played the hick Devil in THE STAND, is McCain’s speechwriter (it all falls into place now!).

And what would a quasi-biopic of Palin be without – Tina Fey? Palin squirms in her seat watching SNL’s Fey take her apart simply by parroting her own words. Ironic, as Palin’s own words are parroted lines to begin with.

Through excellent special effects, GAME CHANGE inserts Moore as Palin into the real life news, interview situations and stumps we’ve all seen, encapsulating everything that mattered from that 2008 campaign – from Palin’s hasty selection, stunning rollout, “inspiring” convention speech, to the “Troopergate” controversy, the disastrous Couric interview, the flip-flop Bridge to Nowhere, the Family Values hypocrisy of her daughter’s pregnancy, the elitist $150,000 wardrobe, to the memorized Biden debate, going rogue, and down to the election night wire when she argued to make a concession speech alongside John McCain. And of course, we are made privy to the scarring backstage kabuki on each of these bytes.

Schmidt realized that trying to “teach” Palin anything for the Vice Presidential debate with Joe Biden was futile (an early scene shows tutors pointing out Germany on a map to her, and trying to outline the distinctions between the Iraq and Afghanistan wars), and resorts to making her memorize a few talking points that she would pivot back to no matter the questions. In other words, parroting lines, no better than a school kid cramming for a test she knows nothing about; no better than W prepped by Carl Rove. Vindicating the horrifying fear we’ve always held that the country is run by a bunch of literal morons.

A refreshing aspect of this background look at the McCain-Palin campaign is that Schmidt and co. were well aware of the dumbass they had on their hands. When Katie Couric asks Palin which papers she reads, Schmidt rails at the TV monitor, “Name one fucking paper!” The whole room breaks out in sighs of disbelief and horror on Palin’s now-infamous reply: “All of them.” And Schmidt turns to Devil and bewails, “What have we done?” That’s never been portrayed before in such stark reality. For the sake of the campaign the advisors retained a bold front in the shadow of their pathetic figurehead, and at times it seemed like EVERYONE on the campaign must have been as mentally lethargic as Palin, for them to allow her to keep spouting such un-sense. But there are always people running things who “KNOW” what’s right and wrong. (That’s why people like Hannity and O’Reilly are unforgiveable: because they are NOT dunces, which means that the venal disinformation they promulgate is a CHOICE. They CHOOSE to be this evil and selfish and duplicitous.)

No real characterizations of any of the spouses or children – there is just too much else in this bustling movie to keep us entertained – with David Barry Gray playing Todd Palin like some nervous day-player sharing a bed with Julianne Moore pretending to be her husband. (Sarah doesn’t make it easy on him, climbing into bed with her hair up and her glasses on. Can anyone say No Chemistry?)

Sad yet funny: a gaggle of poor Down Syndrome babies play Palin’s retarded newborn son Trig. Probably the only person who exploits her Down Syndrome kid more than the parents who allowed their kids to curl up in Moore’s arms is Palin herself, who uses all her children as tools to promote her celebrity.

Palin is portrayed as a compassionate mother for deciding to birth Trig even though she was warned of his disability during her pregnancy. Let’s say it out loud that she didn’t choose to birth that poor kid because she’s compassionate, but because she’s an Anti-Choice fanatic (of course, she calls it “pro-life”). If she possessed a shred of human dignity, she would have aborted that kid and spared it the pain of being Sarah Palin’s kid. The engraved command from Jesus got lost in the mail.

And isn’t it the law of averages that a nudz like Palin would eventually have pumped out a Downie? I’m surprised that her other four didn’t come out retarded. Politically incorrect – or what everyone is thinking? Five young nudzes contributing their low rent genes to the human pool.

More “humanizing” as Palin takes a call from her son in Iraq. When she hangs up, she muses, “My son is safe.” And we feel a slight blade in our guts as we know she is trying to convince herself of her son’s wellbeing, against the reality which is exactly the opposite. We feel Moore’s performance conveying that she has to push thoughts like that out of her head if she is to go forward fake-smiling on the stump.

I have no sympathy for people who doggedly retain their ignorance past the point of being given the opportunity to learn. Palin birthing five kids is not a sign of her “humanity” but of her naïveté and libido. The ignorant should not be breeding! Palin has brought more ignorance into the world by raising her family under her aegis. And her underage daughter (against the tenets of her own “faith” and politics) also brought an ignorant little shit into the world, via father Levi Johnston, who cannot string one sentence together. Who in this world thinks spreading these low rent genes is beneficial to the human race? Other low rent genes. All these maroon-necks should be rounded up and swept into the Pit of Sarlacc! Don’t aggrandize them for the sake they were able to breed. Even turkeys and amoeba breed.

Which brings us to:

the real reason sarah palin is loathed by sensible people

GAME CHANGE highlights not just Palin’s vast brain wasteland, but her incuriousness; the fact that she never wanted to improve herself. If Republicans and Sarah-philes think this is a hit piece, all they have to do is note where Palin is NOW in her world knowledge. Answer: stuck in exactly the same rut. She is a showbiz personality, not a politician or a – snort – “statesman.”

And that is why every sensible person in the world of politics (Republican, Democrat, Independent and non-voter alike) has no patience for the hockey mom with the no-sense mouth. It’s not that she is ignorant (every one of us is ignorant of many things at many points in our lives), it’s that she never sought to allay that ignorance with actual “learning.” When we see her shuffling through innumerable flash-cards, it is a cram session, not actual understanding of policies. She believed Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11, she didn’t know North and South Korea were separate countries, she thought the Queen ran Britain – and you know what, after all the training and prepping and travel and information – she STILL believes all that. Now, if you want to live in a fantasy world where Paul Revere was “makin’ sure as he was ridin’ through town to send those warning shots and bells” to “warn the British that they weren’t gonna be takin’ away our arms…” that’s okay, you have the right to remain ignorant – but keep your puss out of politics! Not only that, when alerted to her egregious mistakes – she maintains she is right!

That’s why sensible people hate her. And if you feel ‘hate’ is too strong a word, how about despise, loathe, abhor [crack your thesaurus].

The media articulated the problem. Campbell Brown: “In fairness, probably most people couldn’t name a Supreme Court case – but most people are not campaigning to be vice president.” Fareed Zakaria: “It’s not that she doesn’t know the right answer – it’s that she clearly does not understand the question.” Yet the Straight Talk Express roared on into the potentially black future. (Actually, I take that back – it was definitely a “black” future – ha!)

Did Steve Schmidt really shout down Palin in that manner? In real life it’s a lot more “diplomatic” and roundabout, but I guess he had nothing to lose at that point. Schmidt starts going for the jugular around the time Palin realizes her celebrity and “goes rogue,” telling him blatantly, “I’m the one raising millions of dollars and if I’m the one they’re flockin’ to see, I’m gonna do what I want!” Her lies about Troopergate (“I’m happy I was cleared of all charges”) and husband Todd’s involvement in the secessionist Alaskan Independent Party (“He checked the wrong box”) cause Schmidt to yell at her, “You cannot say these things if they are untrue. That’s not the way we run this campaign!”

The crowd fervor at Palin’s hate-filled, racist stump speeches (“Obama pallin’ around with terrorists…”) spills into McCain’s stumps, and Schmidt advises McCain to dial back the rhetoric when they hear crowds shouting about Obama, “He’s a socialist!” “Terrorist!” and “Kill him!” Eventually culminating in a classic faceoff with that braindead redneck cunt who claims, “I read about Obama. He’s an Arab,” McCain snatching the mic back and educating her (and the crowd), “No, ma’am, he’s a decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that’s what this campaign is all about.”

We wonder why the filmmakers have such unrequited love for this guy (“This is not the campaign I wanted to run”), whose cowardice allowed Palin’s unchecked mouth to continue to the end of the campaign. “Cowardice,” you say? Yes. No matter the contention over McCain’s military service, flying heroic missions bombing women and children in Viet Nam, or his POW record and alleged torture, the facts during this campaign speak for themselves. When asked by Schmidt to step in and put the brakes on Palin he declines, “Not gonna happen, Stevie boy. She might go after me.” War Hero.

McCain watches Obama newscasts with growing humility and awe. Every time we see snippets of Obama, it is heady, exhilarating, tear-jerking. How could the Republicans compete by putting up a parrot that they were teaching lines, against this constitutional law professor? And to then put the parrot up to denigrate the law professor for being a “community organizer” as if that was a bad thing? (And isn’t that one of the strangest elements of the McCain Campaign’s final legs – that it seemed like Obama was running against Palin?) We remember that time in our veins, when Obama’s intelligence contrasted the outgoing president’s idiocy, and how his eloquence contrasted with the stuttering venality of the old guy with the tits-and-ass sidekick. In other words, the rest of the book Game Change is just waiting to explode onscreen…

Tina Brown (The Daily Beast): “The real revelation in GAME CHANGE: Campaigns turn our politicians into lunatics.”

Luckily, the campaign did nothing to affect Sarah Palin. She was already a lunatic.

Set to Spin: How Sarah Palin Saved America by Losing the Election.

Sarah Palin, the most polarizing and laughable “politician” to ever shamelessly, undeservedly grace a world stage, has her laundry cleaned in this spin-doctored hallelujah chorus. When she ran for the vice presidency of the United States in 2008, she was defeated; when she returned to her post as Governor of Alaska, she quit; when she had the chance to run for a presidential candidacy, she declined. Writer-director Stephen K. Bannon must have been thinking about someone else when he titled his witless encomium THE UNDEFEATED.

In this hedonistic exercise piled neck-deep with talking heads and former staff and flunkies of Palin all effusing over what a blameless demi-god she is, the person I feel most sorry for is the director. Poor Stephen K. Bannon. He wants to fuck Sarah Palin so badly. And that big girl’s blouse Todd keeps being her husband. So sad.

Poor Stephen K. Bannon. His burning love is unrequited: Palin herself – though giving the production her “blessing” – doesn’t appear in it, except in archive footage, though we do hear snatches of her nasal whine reading passages from her audiobook. So sad.

The opening titles inform us THE UNDEFEATED was inspired by Palin’s book Going Rogue: An American Life (a ghost-written hit piece blaming all Palin’s shortcomings and mistakes on Everyone Else). More like “inspired by the tenting in Stephen K. Bannon’s pants.” How else can we perceive this one-note symphony of sophist mendacity?

As the film wears on, it becomes less a contradictory tribute to her outsider status (like every politician, she likes to claim she is not a politician, but a folksy down-home gal who just happens to have been in politics for the last 22 years), and leans gradually and subtly on what her true agenda seems to be: End Times…

Miss Alaska 1984:
“…such as the Iraq such as…”

Any sensible person, myself included, would be willing to give Palin credit for her accomplishments. She was obviously canny enough to become the mayor of Wasilla and then the governor of Alaska. Apply Peter Principle here. Trying to rise above her stature in Alaskan politics was her undoing – she reached her level of incompetence. (She and her “Palin-drones” might argue that it rocketed her into the public eye, riches and power.) And though no one should fault her for not knowing where Iraq was on a map (we all have to look it up for the first time at some point), her problem/downfall is that she never wanted to know. And I bet she still doesn’t know. And that’s the problem with Sarah Palin. This incurious, anti-education, anti-science sociopath stepped into the vice presidential candidate’s ticket with no thought to the geopolitical world at large. But she had facial reconstruction surgery and did her hair.

She’s an acknowledged dunderhead who thrives on being one. Further, she accuses anyone smarter than her of elitism; she considers any question she cannot answer a “gotcha” question; and she promotes stupidity and anti-science to a whole swathe of foaming followers stupider than her, who are loaded springs of social chaos waiting to happen.

All of us encounter situations where we know our knowledge is inadequate to see us through, so we acquire the knowledge needed to move forward. Not Palin. She has rutted in her ignorance since Day One, not only incurious, but intemperately blaming those around her for her incompetence and idiocy, doubling down on incorrect statements rather than typing a few words into Google and acquiring the most basic details to find out that Paul Revere didn’t “warn the British… sending warning shots and bells.” And that is why the great Keith Olbermann was wont to affirm, “That woman – is an idiot!”

Those same sensible people who might give her plaudits for being canny enough to be a sports broadcaster and learn the flute and become a rifle marksman are rightfully alarmed at the darker tone that this movie adopts as it limps to its conclusion. Palin’s fundamentalist background means she believes the Earth is 6,000 years old and dinosaurs walked with cavemen (she must think Peter Jackson’s KING KONG is a documentary); and though the first half of the movie bored us to sleep with wonk minutiae, towards its end, Palin’s religious beliefs filter into the movie’s narrative thread and wake us the fuck up. We start hearing how she is in a “spiritual” battle with her detractors (many of whom are featured in the movie’s opening montage: Bill Maher, Matt Damon, Howard Stern, John Cleese, blogs, websites, a tsunami of negative press junkets). And it is chilling to glean that Palin believes she was divinely chosen as the Lord’s evangel to shepherd His flock during these End Times… Huh? Did that “spiritual” battle start before or after she was asked what newspapers she reads?

Nice legacy, jackass!

Of all the talking heads who offer their unbridled juice for Palin, when Andrew Breitbart appears, it’s all over. It’s been unwatchable up to this point. Now it’s hurting my back. Thank Christ that willfully ignorant, primitive excuse for a human being is dead.

Matt Lewis in The Daily Caller, wrote that THE UNDEFEATED reminded him of ROCKY, in that no one thought Rocky would get that far. If you’d like to wash the taste of Todd’s spunk out of your mouth after watching this tripe, you might consider Nick Broomfield’s SARAH PALIN: YOU BETCHA! (2011), a decidedly unauthorized documentary, featuring interviews with Palin’s family, friends and acquaintances.

THE UNDEFEATED is well-produced, and has all the right BEHIND THE MUSIC beats (early childhood, scratchy video, school photos, mentors, lovers, villains, “then tragedy struck,” successes and slomo) but it is, in one word, boring. And not for the reasons you think. If it were a cacophony of shrikes lauding Palin’s supposed political prowess, that would at least spur outrage in our breasts. But it is merely a combination infomercial/resume, outlining in painful detail Palin’s bill-passing political career, sub-clause by sub-clause. Now that would be fine if your crowd is all politicians and you’re running for a seat where they need to know your background, but let’s not forget that Stephen K. Bannon made this glorified demo reel as apologist retaliation for Palin opening her big mouth during the McCain campaign and vindicating the Peter Principle. Oh, yeah, and because he wants to fuck her.

It’s not just about Too Big To Fail – it’s about betting on failing. And winning. And ensuring everyone else loses.

Michael Moore‘s CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY – a screed on the vampiric system of wealth-creation for the upper class and simultaneous wealth-stultification for the lower – succeeds in being even scarier than his last two incisive exposés on the political underbelly of American society, FAHRENHEIT 9/11 (2004) and SICKO (2007). It’s scarier because, unlike the problems addressed in the other two, Capitalism cannot be stopped.

Released as the United States was in financial meltdown, Moore addresses the reasons for that meltdown (many of them anti-Democratic and unrecognizable as upholding American ideals – yet claiming that they do, of course), pinpoints how key figures in government can be traced back to private enterprises which they still advocate for against the country’s better interests, exposes many of the scams corporations employ to create unethical wealth, and makes an ass of himself with his characteristic public stunts.

Thus CAPITALISM may also be the most futile of Moore’s documentaries. One point comes across loud and clear: we are so ensconced in the system that – like fish – we can do nothing about the water we swim in.

Americans have been conditioned to believe that not only is capitalism the “only” Circle of Life but also the “righteous” system that God himself approves of. The American public has been inculcated so deeply, when Moore shows us Public Announcement clips stating these exact sentiments, it seems as futile as exposing gravity. Like Rod Blagojevich’s hairstyle, it cannot be stopped or tampered with.

the crime of selling crime

Movie opens with security cam footage of bank robbers. No commentary, no narration, no judgment. Many would see this footage as metaphor for what Moore is about to show us – banking institutions robbing the public wildly, doing the same thing as these robbers in a “legalized” manner. Some might say these robbers were the cause of crime. No, they are the RESULT of crime. High “white collar” crimes that create a disparity of wealth, driving the lower classes to acts of desperation caught on security cam.

Blue collar criminals cannot even CONCEIVE of the truly malevolent nature of white collar criminals – keep in mind that white collar crime is responsible for deregulation which causes mine disasters, gas explosions, oil spills, destruction of the environment, hundreds of thousands of lives lost, citizens injured, poisoned; toxic water, billions of dollars squandered in wars, illegal payoffs, bribes, aiding enemy factions therefore indirectly murdering Americans… White collar crime is the WORST kind of crime. And white collar criminals have the audacity to create the perception that blue collar thieves stealing $500 from banks while threatening thirty people are the greatest threat to your safety?! They’re selling you this bottom rung desperation as “crime.” And that’s the biggest crime.

The top 1% in America has more wealth than the bottom 95% combined. This is not because they have an uncompromising work ethic. Nor is it because they produce valuable tangible product integral to the survival of humans. It is because they game the wealth system of the country and don’t care who or what is destroyed in the generation of that vulgar wealth.

A step towards putting these crooks away would be for laypeople to stop using the term “white collar crime” as if it means Shit-Don’t-Stink.

Capitalism was sold to America in the ’50s and ’60s, and Moore rolls out the American Educational films to prove it – irritating Aryan white white white people telling us “Capitalism is Good!” Moore opines the corporate killer instinct only became prominent in the U.S. through the Reagan years. 1987’s WALL STREET didn’t help when Gordon Gekko told us “Greed is good.”

The Educational Video Republican Nazi Aryans chime in: “We know capitalism is inherently right because it is wholesome and good and compatible with God’s laws.” (!)

Cognitive dissonance: it is jarring to hear priests and bishops say capitalism is wrong – when they are beneficiaries of it. Eat my body, drink my Kool Aid.

American capitalism is a beast that is geared to kill you. It is not even a conspiracy, which can usually be stopped by lopping off its head. Capitalism has no head. Like ‘terrorism,’ it is a methodology of fear. Fear of not having enough. Feeding that fear, the corporations who run the politicians who run the people. It is no coincidence corps are called ‘entities’: craven, tentacular beasts, faceless, nameless, diffuse and untraceable, grasping, inculcating, eating us like prey. We are consumed, abused, discarded; contemptible offal.

We are antelopes. Corporations are lions. Antelopes and lions live side by side on the Serengeti yet there is no communication possible between them. Appealing to emotions and sympathies of corporations as if they have morals or ethics is like an antelope appealing to a lion not to eat his uncle with the gammy leg. The roles are concrete: one eats, one gets et. I’m not being sarcastic. I’m not being metaphorical. How can food be sarcastic or metaphorical?

Capitalism has the ability to convince people who are victimized by this very system to support the system.

Consider the infuriating, bald-faced lying advertisements we see today, promoting Bank of America and Scottrade and Allstate as your pals: “When a person does it, it’s called responsible. When an insurance company does it, it’s called Liberty Mutual.” And if I actually try to claim my insurance money, it’s called voice menu, red tape, abandonment, customer disservice, contractual breach…

Or sharebuilder.com fooling people into believing they own a part of the company they buy shares in: “I own my wireless company.” Sure you do, moron. “I own the world’s number one search engine.” Really? Even the owner of Google doesn’t own Google, twit. But Google – the Corporation – owns Android and YouTube and Urchin and Orion and a million other companies – which means it might even own YOU.

A BP ad: “I don’t think you can live the American lifestyle without energy.” What exactly is the “American lifestyle”? Living with your accrued savings always on the edge of being snatched from you by corporate misfeasance?

The corporations and banks are “too big to fail” because we want them to be. Deep in our selfish guts, a carrot dangles, promising that one day we too might avail ourselves of the hedonism that a capitalistic society might provide. We have come to believe the surfeit of media distracting us with hip hop cribs and Trump internships and millionaire bachelors. We know that if this system was excised from society, there would be ZERO chance of us sharing a jacuzzi with twenty topless blondes. With Capitalism, at least there’s a million-to-one chance. In DUMB AND DUMBER, when Jim Carrey is told by the hot blonde that the chance of him scoring her are one in a million, he ecstatically replies, “So you’re telling me there’s a CHANCE!”

Yes, that’s how dumb and dumber they know we are.

Now it’s time to be in favor of the AIG bailout! Then there was the fake suspension of the campaign to pass the Wall Street bailout. Then the Republican party ran ads against the Wall Street bailout…

He’s that type of guy. Look at him on that stump, turning purple as a bell-end in his witless denunciation of Barack Obama. Yet no matter how impassioned his mindless, mendacious rhetoric, he just won’t say That Word – even though every fiber of his Old-Man-Yells-At-Cloud demeanor bespeaks it.

Then I realized he didn’t have to say That Word. Because the spineless, lowlife Republicans have found the ultimate euphemism, a displacement word as diabolical as their black hearts and snake agendas.

A euphemism that brings with it all the negative baggage of generations, oppression, dehumanization, unconditional hate; a New N-Word signifying pariah, alien, backward, unholy – exactly what That Word used to signify when it was used in civil society with impunity.

The new N-word: Terrorist.

It started in June 2008 with FOX News bimbo du jour, E.D. Hill, asking of Michelle and Barack’s fist bump, “A pound? A terrorist fist jab?” and right-wingnut Conservative website Human Events calling it a “Hezbollah-style fist jabbing.” These summations were so outlandish they were caricatured by other news programs. But the Republicans got what they wanted – “Terrorist” was back in popular circulation. And being applied to the Democrat Obama. In the past few weeks, with McCain town hall conventions coming to resemble Klan rallies, now we see where those unpatriotic bigots were going with that seeding of hatred.

With every armpit-sweat-drenched ululation of the New N-Word at Republican rallies, with every intimation and allusion and inference from the flannel-flecked crowd; with every hate-seared lie and donkey breath that issues from the lizard lips of John McCain and the cum-glazed pig-lipstick of Sarah Palin – they’re saying Nigger… in the most patriotic way possible.

You see, a white supremacist racist bigot can’t say Nigger in civil society anymore without their white hood on – it would lose them an election… but a person of any ethnicity can say Terrorist anywhere. And be applauded as a Caring, Free, Courageous American.

For years I thought only Lynyrd Skynyrd could conjure Instant Mongoloid Symposiums, but if you want to see people as red of neck or as mong of loid as Skynyrd dingbats, visit a 2008 Republican convention.

Sheriff Mike Scott, of Lee County, Florida, in full uniform, as introductory speaker for Palin, spikes the crowd’s mongo nerve by declaring, “On November 4th, let’s leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened.” To the world at large, Barack’s full legal name is just that – his full name; to the goofball acid-heads and Klansfolk at McCain-Palin rallies it is Hussein = Saddam = Terrorist = The New N-Word. But this neckless hate-monger plays the “What Controversy?” card when his Inbox chocks with caustic rejoinders: “It absolutely shocks me. And I’m appalled by some of the e-mails. They are hateful and spiteful.” And where exactly is that hate and spite generated, if not at the stump you just laid an egg on?

“Reverend” Arnie Conrad, introductory speaker at a McCain rally, beseeches God to “step in” and make McCain win, “because there are people praying to other gods for other results.” Arnie’s unspoken subtext is that the MUSLIM GOD supports Obama. (Muslim = Terrorist = The New N-Word.) The mindless corollary to this request is: should Obama win, I guess God becomes Allah’s nigger.

The Virginia Republican party chairman, Jeff Frederick, compares Obama to Osama bin Laden! When asked about it, McCain does nothing to repudiate the claim.

James T. Harris (African-American talk show host on News Radio 620 WTMJ Milwaukee) addresses McCain by “begging him” to “take it to [Obama]” by re-raising the dead-as-dodos Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers and ACORN. And in a comment to CNN, even Harris acknowledges what the predominantly white crowd is thinking when they see him (Harris) at Republican rallies, “Just what is that N-Word doing here amongst us white people?” His reasons for supporting McCain are irrelevant (he’s a self-admitted “real Conservative” and trying to lean McCain towards his position – fat chance!); the point here is that even though he shares the same ideology with the crowd, he admits they STILL CONSIDER HIM AN N-WORD!

Ana Marie Cox of Time Magazine notes, “The wingnuts are the only people LEFT to come to these rallies.”

Not just at the rallies, the balls to publicly call Obama Nigger Without Calling Him Nigger has spread to the rest of the media. To illustrate the madness of the New Improved Unsheeted Klan, Tom Leykis 97.1 KLSX Los Angeles, reads a hate-letter on-air: “…send that black bastard back to Hawaii to pick pineapples with his feet.” You gotta admit, that one’s kinda funny, but the goon agitator mentions Hawaii in the context of it being another country. (If he could see Russia from his house, he’d call it America.)

Another caveman turns up at a McCain-Palin rally with a Curious George monkey, putting an Obama headband on it to signify… I guess, uh, Curious George supports Obama? (I urge you to click this link to watch the video: a priceless, minute-long depiction of the face of the McCain-Palin Campaign: racist bravado when surrounded by their own kind, then yellow cowardice when confronted.)

And if calling Obama a Nigger via euphemism is not enough, how about extending that euphemism to Sand-Nigger? Rensselaer County, New York printed 4000 ballots with Barack’s name “misprinted” – ahem – as Barack Osama. 300 absentee ballots were sent out before someone reported the – ahem – “typo.” Election officials said it was “…an honest mistake innocently done.” Let’s pretend we believe this transparent lie: if it WAS an “honest mistake,” someone had to physically manipulate the type onto the original template for the ballot (digitally, mechanically, whatever – there was a PERSON at the helm); the only way this mistake could be made – even unconsciously – is because the Terrorist inculcation has become so vivid and ubiquitous that it simply slipped their bleating goat mind.

More than just a negative smear campaign, the Republicans have given license to all those fuming nigger-haters, all trying to be so pc (“pc” = Painfully Caucasian), who in reality are fatally close to busting a blood vessel suppressing that Old N-Word; given them license by bequeathing The New N-Word for them to orgasmically spout like a fire-hose out of control.

Tell McCain to End the Politics of Hate

Pertaining to Bill Ayers, a 1960s anti-war radical (whom Obama met when Ayers was a respected community member in 2002), McCain himself repeats on every TV interview: “I don’t care about two washed-up old terrorists that are unrepentant about trying to destroy America. But I do care, and Americans should care, about [Obama’s] relationship with him…” McCain thinks that in playing “good cop” to his redneck crowd’s “bad cop” we won’t notice he’s fanning the flames with The New N-Word. Yet this gutless cur refuses to bring up these “terrorist issues” when he is face-to-face with Obama at two debates. If the terrorist claim is true, shouldn’t McCain be calling 9-1-1 or something? Instead, he opts to shake the hand of a man he himself accuses of being a “terrorist sympathizer” – what kind of message does that send about the two-faced McCain?

The RIGHT message.

The issues have been marginalized, the lie about “suspending the campaign until the economy is fixed” has been pasted over with more lies; the lie about “running a clean campaign” swept under the rug (like McCain’s mob ties to Joe Bananas, his numerous affairs – yeh, “family values” – and the Keating Five scandal); the Republican Base alienated and insulted on so many levels (with the directionless meandering of McCain and his insensate tapping of the most unqualified person in America as his running mate); every shred of decency trampled in the shark frenzy to smear an honest man and attain the presidency at any cost.

And we thought George W. Bush was a thug, moron and liar of astronomical proportions – a swine who caused the deaths of over 4,100 of his own countryfolk on the basis of a proven lie. Look at McCain-Palin go!

Okay, if we run with the lie about “training,” then we have to acknowledge that military training includes methods on how to avoid capture. Guess you missed those classes, John. Or maybe FAILED them. For all his gab about military service and POW “heroism,” John McCain never mentions he was at the BOTTOM of his military class: graduating in 1958 from the Naval Academy, 894th out of 899.

Well-trained?!

Considering McCain’s mental prowess, Obama’s mantra describing a McCain presidency as “Four more years of George W. Bush” is not far wrong.

Shouldn’t this mean that the 893 who graduated ABOVE McCain and who DIDN’T get captured and who are still alive without PTSD (because, of course, they were EVEN BETTER TRAINED than McCain) would make EVEN BETTER presidents?

Your Republican Party is in power right now (albeit laughably) – pick up the phone to W, implement your plan and catch Osama… or are you BLACKMAILING the American people into voting for you first, then you’ll reveal your Grand Plan? Which – I’ll wager my left nut – is no plan at all.

But we can’t really call McCain a terrorist – like his mentor, idol and ballsac-fondler, George W. Bush, he’s just a dangerous fool. His problems are now compounding and conundruming: in wallowing so deep in shit, McCain now finds he must DEFEND the man he is smearing at the very rallies where he is smearing this man. When that lady calls Obama an Arab, McCain counters with, “No ma’am, he’s a decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with.” When an illiterate munghole voices his concern about “someone who cohorts with domestic terrorists” [the word is “consorts,” maroon-neck!], McCain addresses the escalating fear-mongering: “…he is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared as president of the United States” – and was BOOED for this rare showing of actual integrity!

The maroons WANT to believe Obama is dangerous. They NEED to think of him as Muslim. They HAVE to call him Terrorist. Because they can’t say the N-Word!

But is McCain’s recant really “integrity”? No. McCain tempers the hate-speech like the gutless, unprincipled swine we’ve come to realize he is. He has never yet issued a statement/warning that hate-speech and slander will not be tolerated at his rallies. Then he’d have to stop the hate-speech and slander himself. And he doesn’t really want to stop his unpatriotic, ignorant fans from THINKING what they’re thinking. THAT would be guts. THAT would be honor. McCain lacks both.

Because HE is thinking exactly what THEY are thinking. Remember, he’s not thinking “Terrorist.” He’s thinking “Nigger.” Like the rest of the Klan. He’s just SAYING Terrorist…

They’re all over Obama’s “associations” like red on neck – but does anyone without a missing chromosome really want to “associate” with the people McCain is associating with? These trailer-park morons and kitchen politicos, who are so ignorant and racist they think that “Muslim” and “Arab” per se are actual insults.

As Ana Marie Cox tells us, these are the only people left whom McCain is appealing to. Because his “base” has long since deserted this weak, washed-up fraud.

Will (“can a dismaying temperament be fixed?”), to neo-con Nazi, William Kristol (“junk the whole thing and start over“), to runway mannequin, Mitt Romney (“Huge mistake“), Dracula ex-governor of Wisconsin, Tommy Thompson (“not happy“) to the reptilian butterball who Stole Christmas in Whoville, Newt Gingrich (“show he’s different than Bush”).

Flailing in desperation, some Republicans don’t even want to be called Republican any more! Dino Rossi, a Seattle senator and crybaby, wants to be called the “GOP Party” or he’ll hold his breath. Okay, so he won’t sprain a brain cell, let’s call him the Grand Old Party Party. Moron.

McCain-Palin is not just a train wreck – this is the space shuttle disintegrating without an ablative shield, hitting the Atlantic in shards, with intestines and skull fragments splattering the harp seal nesting grounds.

As a final testament to the “character” and “judgment” of the McCain campaign (things they keep telling us Obama lacks): from the beginning, they were stealing rock songs without permission from artists, to use at their rallies. Heart and Foo Fighters have issued public Cease and Desist statements; Van Halen and Jackson Browne have also butted heads with the criminal McCain campaign. If we’re bombarded by annoying commercials telling us not to steal music online, shouldn’t the prospective leader of the country set the example?

Maybe they could steal FREEBIRD next. Lynyrd Skynyrd would love performing at their next convention…

One in 1990, 1995, 2001, 2008 – can you imagine, men, the sorry state of that seed-swollen belly?; like 30 miles of Death Valley fire trails under that chastity-belt blouse.

This stripper librarian has not even exposed her CLEAVAGE yet – because when she unhooks that padded push-up bra, her nipples point to China. Any man who has had any natural woman over 30 knows this! This condescending harridan with her memorized lies can accuse falsely, make fake claims, employ sexism and rabid foam-mouthed slander – but no one is allowed to talk TO her or ABOUT her – because that would be sexism. It is at HER rallies that the most intense threats and verbal denunciations are heard. She – like McCain – does nothing to quell the hate, only intensifying the hate-speech.

Talk about calling kettles black: this morally bankrupt woman and her hand-puppet husband were members of the Alaskan Independence Party, a league of maroon-necks trying to secede from the United States; consorting with founder and Lower-48-Hater, Joe Vogler: “The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government and I won’t be buried under their damn flag.” Todd Palin was registered until 2002; Sarah gave an opening address in 2008. That’s the year she was running for VP. That’s NOW. Vogler maintained: “I’m an Alaskan, not an American. I’ve got no use for their damned institutions.”

And Palin has the ballsac to stand under a “Country First” banner and question OBAMA’S patriotism? As Keith Olbermann commented: “Which Country First?”

Either way, which option qualifies her to be VP or – heaven forfend! – president of these 49-United-States-and-Alaska?
